In the winter of 2025, on the heels of our Metal Hurlant crowdfunding campaign, we felt inspired to take on yet another ambitious project.
COSMOCHASM was a dual Kickstarter launch celebrating the Chilean roots of two beloved Humanoids creators, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Gabriel Rodríguez, each represented by one of his works: Cosmopirates, written by Jodorowsky and drawn by Pete Woods, and The Chasm of Resurrection, drawn by Rodríguez from a script by Hirodjee. The two books were to be joined by a very special project created by Jodorowsky and Rodríguez themselves over the course of the campaign, later titled The Fireboy of Tocopilla (read more about it here).
The response was immediate, and we were, and still are, moved by everyone's enthusiasm. What followed took longer. COSMOCHASM has been a journey in which each achievement revealed a new challenge and taught us something new about these books, both as objects and as productions.
In the months after the campaign, Jodorowsky and Rodríguez created The Fireboy of Tocopilla, and we produced it along with the two other books and their special mirror-effect covers and slipcases. These covers are printed on mirror board with a white underbase beneath the colors: wherever the white is left out, the mirror shows through and gives the colors a metallic sheen.
Needless to say, we are a bit behind the schedule we originally had in mind. Falling into the trap of (too?) often wanting to push the envelope isn't necessarily a good thing, but hopefully it will be to the delight of our backers and of those lucky enough to grab the last copies of the print run from our online store. We always print a few extra copies, to leave the necessary margin in case of an unfortunate event during transportation, such as boxes falling off a pallet.
Standard editions of Cosmopirates and The Chasm of Resurrection will eventually reach bookstores, but without the special covers and slipcases. The Fireboy of Tocopilla will not be available in bookstores at all.
As the books are on their way to our fulfillment centers and will reach our backers in November, we want to thank all of them for their grace and patience throughout the making of this multifaceted project.
